Reality and the sim
From the real circuit to Assetto Corsa EVO
A historic circuit, measured today
Watkins Glen has been resurfaced and modified several times since 1956, and the laser scan captures its current state with its undulations and changes of gradient. In the Esses that matters a lot: the climb isn't uniform and the car compresses at specific points.
The wooded upstate New York surroundings, reproduced by photogrammetry, provide what few visual references the Boot has.
What carries over well
Trust in grip. Learning in the sim that the Esses is flat trains exactly the skill you need on track: trusting your downforce rather than your sense of risk.
Tyre management too, because sustained lateral loads are well modelled and the logic of looking after the outside right is identical.
What doesn't carry over
Accumulated fatigue. A long race at Watkins Glen subjects a driver to almost continuous lateral load for hours, which is why fitness matters so much here.
Nor the changing state of the surface: the Boot is used little during the year and its real grip varies a lot from one weekend to the next.
Visitar el Glen
The circuit is in the Finger Lakes, a region of lakes and vineyards in upstate New York, and the town of Watkins Glen has lived off motor racing since the forties.
The town streets where the first races were run are signposted and can be followed on foot or by car along the original 1948 route. [Confirm calendar and access on the circuit's official website.]
