What you'll find

Oulton Park is a circuit laid out inside an English estate, among trees and lakes, and that defines it: narrow, undulating and with very little margin. It has no long straights and no wide run-off; it has blind corners, compressions and track edges that arrive sooner than you expect. In Assetto Corsa EVO it's one of the layouts that most rewards knowing the ground, because here the person who knows every metre is always faster than the one with the good car.

The track is narrower than at any modern circuit and the elevation change is constant. Cascades, shortly after the start, drops towards a lake with the racing line narrowing: it's where most people end up off the road.

Knickerbrook arrives after a fast descent and is braked for in compression, with the car heavy. And Druids, up top, is a blind uphill double right. The whole lap rewards knowing the ground over having the fast car.

Where the time is

The three keys

01

Cascades

A descent towards the lake with the track narrowing. Nothing on the outside.

02

Knickerbrook

Braking in compression after a fast descent. The car weighs twice as much.

03

Druids

Doble derecha ciega en subida. La salida vale toda la recta.

Lap guide

Sector by sector

How the lap unfolds from start to finish, with the lines and the places where time is genuinely won and lost.

Trazado de Oulton ParkS1

Sector 1 · Old Hall y Cascades

The lap starts at Old Hall Corner, a fast right where the circuit's character is already obvious: the entry is fine but the exit narrows and the edge of the track arrives immediately.

Then comes Cascades, the most famous corner here: a fast left that drops towards the lake while the track closes in. It's where most people go off, because the instinct to run wide on exit collides with the fact that out there, simply, there's no track.

Trazado de Oulton ParkS2

Sector 2 · Island Bend y Knickerbrook

The middle section chains fast corners between the trees, with Island Bend and the descent to Knickerbrook. It's a stretch of high speed and very few references, where the constant elevation change never lets the car settle.

Knickerbrook comes at the bottom of the descent and is braked for in full compression, with the car weighing twice as much. It's a very strange braking zone: treat it like a normal one and you overshoot every time.

Trazado de Oulton ParkS3

Sector 3 · Druids, Lodge y vuelta a meta

The climb to Druids is one of the most committing parts: a blind uphill double right where you can't see the exit and have to turn by reference. A good exit there shapes the final section.

The lap ends at Lodge Corner, a tight right that opens onto the pit straight. It's the circuit's only genuinely reliable overtake, which is why every race is decided there.

Setup

How to set the car up

Oulton Park needs a car that absorbs. The elevation change is constant and there are hard compressions at Knickerbrook and on the Cascades descent, so a stiff setup skips exactly where you have least margin to the edge of the track.

Downforce goes high: there are no straights to punish wing and plenty of fast, blind corners where grip is welcome. Here, driving safe is literally driving fast.

Balance matters more than top speed. With blind corners and no run-off, a car that surprises you mid-corner isn't fast: it's an accident waiting to happen.

Cars

Which car to bring here

Touring cars and GT4

The circuit is built for them and is a regular British motorsport venue. The racing is extremely close because overtaking is so hard.

GT3

Spectacular for the speed they reach between the trees, though their width makes the circuit feel narrower still.

Monoplazas ligeros

Great fun on a layout like this, though the margin for error is essentially zero.

Mistakes

What almost everyone gets wrong

  1. Abrirse en la salida de Cascades. The track closes in towards the lake. It's the most repeated mistake here and it almost always ends off the road.
  2. Frenar normal en Knickerbrook. You brake in compression, with the car loaded. Use a normal braking reference and you overshoot.
  3. Girar por la vista en Druids. It's blind and uphill. You turn by an external reference; waiting to see the apex means arriving late.
  4. Intentar adelantar fuera de Lodge. El circuito es demasiado estrecho. Los intentos en otros puntos acaban en contacto casi siempre.
  5. Running the car very stiff. The elevation and the compressions demand absorption. The stiffness that works at a smooth circuit moves you towards the edge of the track here.
Practice

How to learn it without frustration

Learn the blind corners first, running slowly and noting the external references. At Oulton Park half a dozen corners are taken without seeing the exit, and without those references no rhythm is possible.

Work Cascades and Knickerbrook in isolation. They hide the most time and catch out the most people, and both need repetition before you understand what the car does.

Then do long runs. The narrowness and the lack of run-off are mentally tiring, and in a race the mistakes come at the end, when concentration drops.

Conditions

Rain and night

In the wet

The tree cover makes the track dry very unevenly: there are dry stretches and damp ones at the same time, especially between Cascades and Knickerbrook. With the circuit already narrow, rain turns it into an exercise in restraint.

At night

It isn't a regular night-racing venue and the lack of lighting in the wooded section makes it especially hard. The blind corners become almost pure memory.

Reality and the sim

From the real circuit to Assetto Corsa EVO

Una finca convertida en circuito

Oulton Park was laid out in 1953 over the driveways of an estate, and it keeps that character: road width, natural elevation and trees right at the edge. The laser scan captures the undulations, which are why the car never quite settles.

The woodland and lake surroundings, reproduced by photogrammetry, provide the few references available for the blind corners.

What carries over well

Track memory and external references, which are practically everything at a circuit like this. And the technique of braking in compression, which Knickerbrook forces you to learn.

It's also a circuit heavily used by British driving schools precisely because it teaches discipline: anyone who learns here learns to respect the edge of the track.

What doesn't carry over

The perceived narrowness. On screen the track looks a normal width; in person, with the trees a couple of metres away, the feeling is completely different and shapes what a driver dares to do.

Nor the state of the surface, which at a circuit like this varies a great deal with damp and with the shade of the trees.

Visitar Oulton Park

The circuit is in Cheshire, in north-west England, in a setting of woodland and lakes that makes it one of the prettiest in the country. It runs track days and club events throughout the season.

It's a regular BTCC and British GT venue, and spectators can watch the racing from very close indeed. [Confirm calendar and access on the circuit's official website.]

History

Where it comes from

The circuit was laid out in 1953 over the driveways of the Oulton Park estate in Cheshire, using the parkland's rolling terrain and its lakes.

It has never hosted a Grand Prix, but it's a classic date in British motorsport and one of the BTCC drivers' favourite tracks for its old-circuit character.

Visiting the real circuit

Oulton Park is in Cheshire, in north-west England, less than an hour from Manchester and Liverpool. Its woodland and lake setting makes it one of the prettiest circuits in the country.

It runs track days, driving schools and club events throughout the season. Being narrow and demanding, some previous experience is recommended before driving here.

Trivia

Questions

Frequently asked

How long is Oulton Park?

The International configuration is 4.307 kilometres with 14 corners. There are also the shorter Island and Fosters variants.

Which is the hardest corner at Oulton Park?

Cascades, the fast left that drops towards the lake while the track narrows. It's where most people go off.

Where do you overtake at Oulton Park?

Essentially only at Lodge Corner, the tight right onto the pit straight. The circuit is too narrow to try anywhere else.

Why is Knickerbrook so difficult?

Because you brake in full compression at the bottom of a fast descent. The car weighs far more than usual and the normal braking references don't apply.

Has Formula 1 raced at Oulton Park?

Ha acogido pruebas de monoplazas no puntuables, pero nunca un Gran Premio del campeonato del mundo.

Can you drive at Oulton Park?

Yes, it runs track days throughout the season, though given its narrowness and lack of run-off some previous experience is advisable.
